Seminar on Muslim Women

  The Seminar aims to:
  • Provide and assist service providers to develop culturally and religiously appropriate services and programs that meet the diverse needs of its clients.
  • Increase staff awareness of Islamic beliefs & practices and their importance to the Muslim way of life.
  • Correct myths and misconceptions held about the role and position of Muslim Women within the Islamic and general community.
  • Identify barriers to access & equity issues for Muslim women and strategies for addressing these barriers.
  • Highlight good practice models undertaken by the Muslim community in partnership with government and non-government based agencies.
  • Strengthen links between the Muslim community and other service providers in order to provide timely religiously appropriate services.

Who should attend this seminar?

  • This seminar targets service providers from local, state and federal agencies whose clients include women of the Islamic Faith.
  • Any individual or organisation working with people of culturally and
    religiously diverse backgrounds.

Date: Please choose ONE of the following two sessions:

Session 1: 24th September 2002

OR

Session 2: 4th November 2002

Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
Venue: Session 1: Canterbury/ Bankstown Migrant Resource Centre, Level 2, 59 Evaline Street, Campsie 2194 (all day parking facilities are available at Campsie Mall shopping centre).

Session 2: Muslim Women Association, 47 Wangee Rd Lakemba.

Cost of Attending: $50.00 (includes morning and afternoon tea, and lunch).

Topics to be covered include:

  • Islam: history, beliefs and practices
  • Profile of Muslims locally and globally
  • Profile of Muslim women in Australia and specifically NSW, with emphasis on Bankstown LGA and other LGAs’ distributions
  • Access and equity issues - implications for Muslim women
  • Challenging myths and misconceptions
  • Strategies for working with Muslim women and the Muslim communities
  • Developing and strengthening community/government partnerships
